Finding Home

Meet Evelyn Raimundo, who keeps busy as a museum docent and Jade Circle member after raising two children in Fremont.

Meet Evelyn Raimundo, who keeps busy as a museum docent and Jade Circle member after raising two children in Fremont. Evelyn and her husband Cris fled the Philippines for the U.S. in the early 1970s, after President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law and tanks rolled onto the university campus where they were studying business. In California, she found a new home at the Asian Art Museum.
What drew you to the Asian Art Museum?

When I discovered the Asian Art Museum, it was like going home again. I found the same rich mixture of cultures that I remembered from the Philippines, which blends indigenous, Chinese, Spanish, and Islamic influences.

What do you most enjoy about being a museum docent?

It gives me a sense of belonging and pride to be able to share the wealth of Asian history and to open the eyes of children to the world’s diversity.

What is your favorite museum experience?

The first Sunday in October, when the museum celebrates Filipino American History Month, I lead a tour that focuses on the Philippine objects in the collection. It’s delightful to see Filipino American children discovering their cultural heritage.

What does being a member of Jade Circle mean to you?

Being in the Jade Circle gives me a front-row seat at the museum. I love hearing directly from curators about exhibitions, learning about the inner workings of the museum, and making friends with other members who are also passionate about Asian art and culture.
